Succulents and cristata cacti are plants that have undergone a rare genetic mutation that alters their growth pattern. Instead of growing upwards from a single point (apex), they develop horizontally, forming wavy structures that resemble rooster combs, fans, or even brains.
The growth point stretches and elongates. This causes dozens of new shoots to sprout close together, flattening the stem and creating the characteristic sinuous shape.
